Crimea is a peninsula that extends out into the Black Sea. It has an area of about ten thousand square miles or about the same size as the state of Massachusetts. Crimea is situated on the southern side of Ukraine and on the northern side of the Black Sea.

The first settlers of Crimea were the Cimmerians who inhabited the region in the 7th and 8th century BC. During the 5th century, Greek settlers began to inhabit the area. The ancient Greek colony of Chersoneses, which is located just outside of Sevastopol and is often referred to as the “Ukrainian Pompeii”, was excavated by the Russian government. Today it is an archeological site and park visited by thousands of tourists each year.
